Aquatint is a copper plate etching technique used to create areas of flat tone, color, or value. This workshop will focus specifically on rosin aquatints, whereby a matrix of finely ground rosin dust is fused with heat to a copper plate and then etched.
In this two focused, two-session workshop, students will learn the basics of this fundamental etching technique and execute an original aquatint etching of their own design. In the first session, students will learn how to degrease a plate, transfer their image, use stop outs to mask the plate, apply and melt a rosin aquatint, and etch their plate. In the second session, students will work on developing their images, etching their plates, and pulling impressions on our Conrad etching press. Students will learn how to properly ink, hand wipe, and print an etching as well as learning about how to make ink choices and modifications for pulling a successful impression. Students will leave with a small edition of their original aquatint etching printed on cotton rag paper. No experience necessary, open to all skill levels.
