About the Press

Our
Story
Moonlight Press is a printmaking-based project space and limited edition print publisher located in Oakland, California.
Founded by Master Printer Nichol Markowitz, the press is driven by a deep commitment to material knowledge, the preservation of traditional printmaking techniques, artistic collaboration, accessible education, and the careful execution of complex, artist-centered work. Specializing in copper plate etching, mokuhanga woodblock printing, and traditional Japanese scroll-mounting techniques, the studio offers a wide variety of project-based and contract printmaking services as well as a rotating selection of hands-on workshops.
Grounded in a deep respect for craft and process, Moonlight Press’s publishing program produces limited edition fine art prints in collaboration with emerging, mid-career, and established artists. The press is dedicated to supporting artists in realizing ambitious print projects that unite contemporary ideas with traditional processes and experimental techniques.
Nichol Markowitz earned her BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design in 2007 and has since built a professional practice rooted in technical rigor and collaborative experimentation. She has executed print projects for artists including Josephine Taylor, Solange Roberdeau, Judy Pfaff, Joyce Kozloff, Nicola López, Sandow Birk, Lothar Osterberg, Emilie Clark, Max Gimblett, Katsura Funakoshi, Swoon, and Artemio Rodriguez. She worked as a printer at Hui Press and Mullowney Printing and served as art director and master printer for Oakland-based artist Favianna Rodriguez for ten years.
In 2022, Nichol completed her graduate studies, earning a Master’s degree in Modern and Contemporary Art History from Azusa Pacific University. Through Moonlight Press, she brings together deep technical expertise, historical knowledge, and a contemporary approach to printmaking in service of artists and ideas.
