Over the course of 4 weeks, students will learn the fundamentals of this traditional, non-toxic process to complete a 2-4 color woodblock print of their own design. This more in-depth version of our popular Mokuhanga Bootcamp will cover carving Shina plywood with Japanese hand tools, the kento registration system, inking the blocks with traditional brushes, special effect printing techniques like bokashi, and printing the block by hand with a Japanese baren. Students will also learn about the materials, history, and contemporary applications of this versatile process. This process does not require the use of a press or other specialized machinery, making it an ideal form of printmaking for those with limited access to facilities.
