Learn about the versatility and textural possibilities of the soft ground technique in copper plate etching. Using a semi-soft wax-based ground, this technique is a way of etching detailed textures like lace, leaves, and even fingerprints into copper. Students will learn how to apply a soft ground, transfer texture(s) to their plate, etch with ferric chloride, and ink and print their plates on a Conrad etching press. Participants will leave with an etched copper plate and hand pulled prints of their own design.
Materials Provided:
6” x 4.5” copper plate
soft ground
selection of materials for embossing textures
cotton rag paper
etching ink
use of studio expendables: acid, solvents, rags, tarlatan etc
